Pedestal standing fan

This is the traditional style of standing fan that most of you will recognize. A normal round fan with cage (generally between 12 and 24 inches in diameter) is supported by means of a single column which is often telescopic to allow you to alter the height of the fan. Look for a model with an oscillating function allowing the fan to cover a larger area and at least 3 speeds. If possible try to get a demonstration of the model you want so you can check for the amount of noise it produces.

Tower standing fan

Tower fans are more recent introductions into the world of fans. Instead of one large fan on top of a supporting post, they have either multiple small fans stacked on top of each other, or a slot with which to dispense cool air. They are more contemporary looking than pedestal fans and are generally shorter (up to around 40 inches tall) and thinner allowing them to be placed more discretely than equivalent pedestal models.
